MFA of Russia on Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski's pronouncements in connection with the Syrian chemical weapons

A number of media have recently quoted the Foreign Minister of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski as saying that the Soviet Union had allegedly contributed to Syria's acquisition of their chemical weapons arsenal and thus Russia must deem itself partly responsible for what had happened.
There is nothing more distant from reality. One should understand that the development of Syria's chemical industry in the 1970-1980 was more contributed by Western supplies of technology and precursors, including those of double use, than by the Soviet Union.
As to the idea that Russia should have assumed the responsibility for the security of Syria's chemical weapons voiced by the Head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, such presentation of the problem cannot but leave perplexed. It is the government of the sovereign Syria who bears the exclusive responsibility for the security of their weapons. Neither interior nor exterior forces should hinder the implementation of this task or interfere in this process. All the opposing pearties in Syria must realize that the use of toxic agents is absolutely unacceptable.
