Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov presented his credetials to the OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro

September 27, 2017

Today Ambassador Anatoly Antonov presented his credentials to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almagro. Their first meeting was held in a constructive manner. Russia is among the most active permanent observers to the Organization. We consider it to be an important multilateral venue for developing dialogue in the Western hemisphere, as well as a regional mechanism to promote inter-American mutual understanding and cooperation.
Russian interest towards Latin America is of consistent and long-term nature. We maintain strategic partnerships with quite a number of Latin American and Caribbean countries. We are trying to develop a constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation with all states and integration associations in the region.
We are pleased to note the growing interest of OAS member-states to Russian drug control training courses for police officers, set up by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in the regional training facilities in Nicaragua and Peru. In particular, our experts in Managua on a voluntary basis train specialists in combating drug trafficking for regional law-enforcement agencies. Each year the center can enroll up to 400 trainees. Over the recent years 330 Latin Americans have been studying in universities of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Special EMERCOM training courses for firemen and rescuers were also set up in Cuba. Fire service representatives from eight Latin American countries have attended them.
