On December 11, 2013, Russia Beyond the Headlines (RBTH), the international project of Rossiyskaya Gazeta, releases Russian Hockey Players Guide v2.0, the second edition of its interactive guide to the Russian side of the NHL. With the new hockey season in full swing, RBTH aims to “add fuel to the fire” with its unique take on the coolest sport on ice.

“Why are we doing this? Hockey is action – it’s like a blockbuster movie with one’s favorite actors and a guaranteed happy ending: at first they fight on the ice like MMA stars, and then they hug each other, in an explosion of emotions that would move Putin to tears,” editor Leo Zaytsev explains.

It’s easy to learn more about hockey with the Russian Hockey Players Guide v2.0. Readers can find out more about Russian hockey players who made it into the NHL and became living legends, and get this season’s inside stories directly from coaches, players and NHL experts. Infographics, insights and forecasts on the NHL season and the Sochi Winter Olympics are prominently featured alongside profiles of the players. All content is enriched with high-resolution photos that will thrust the viewer into the middle of the action on the ice.

Hardcore hockey fans will particularly enjoy the guide’s interactive content. RBTH invites you to discover a series of unique features: compare the players’ profiles in the Celebrity Players Fight section, browse the Hockey Hugs gallery of hockey fan photos, and test your knowledge with a quiz on the most famous NHL players. In the battle between long-time favorites and underdogs, the fans are the season’s true winners!

The guide has received high praise for its innovative approach in bringing together the opinions of experts from different sides of the ocean. “Any juxtaposition of experts’ opinions helps to create a fuller and more knowledgeable picture of the situation,” says Ilya Moliver, a Russian agent in the U.S. who counts the great Ilya Kovalchuk among his clients.

The full guide, featuring exclusive editorial and interactive content, can be downloaded on iOS and Android tablets in app format. A free preview version, available online on the Russia Beyond the Headlines website, is due to be released later in the year. The online version of the guide, featuring selected material from the app, will be updated in real-time to record the progress of the teams during the current season. RBTH will provide constantly updated coverage of the games, timetables and forecasts.
