March 30, 2016

On March 30, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov and US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon met for consultations at the Russian Foreign Ministry office.

The meeting focused on issues related to developments in the Middle East and North Africa, with emphasis on the situation in Yemen and Libya.

The two officials had a substantial exchange of opinions and made note of Moscow and Washington’s concurring points of view on this issue. In particular, both sides emphasised the necessity for a prompt political and diplomatic solution to the crises ravaging Yemen and Libya by way of inclusive national dialogue and based on corresponding international legal solutions and relying on the assistance of the global community.

Mr Bogdanov and Mr Shannon expressed concern over the developing humanitarian crisis in Yemen and Libya, as well as over the increasing activity of ISIS, al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups there. In this regard, they noted the importance of efficient and coordinated efforts against extremists’ plans of turning the two countries into platforms for their subversive activities.
