Embassy Statement

January 10, 2018

We constantly monitor the situation with the Russian citizens who have been imprisoned in the USA on groundless charges. Naturally, their well-being is our top priority.
As soon as we learned about Viktor Bout’s (illegally sentenced to 25 years in prison) illness, the Embassy’s diplomats promptly contacted the administration of the Penitentiary Marion where he is serving his sentence and demanded that he receive immediate and quality treatment.
Unfortunately, the needed assistance was not provided instantly. We had to submit additional requests to local authorities through the U.S. State Department to influence the intolerable situation and make sure that Viktor Bout received proper treatment. Thanks to our efforts his condition stabilized.
We will continue our vigorous and determined efforts to get the American side to strictly comply with the obligation to create humane prison conditions for Russian citizens, including what concerns guaranteeing the protection of their health. We call upon international human rights organizations to join us in monitoring this issue that concerns Russians imprisoned in the USA. It has become systematic.
