Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova on the release of a US citizen with Russia’s assistance

April 8, 2016

Some time ago, US President Barack Obama addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin with a personal request for help in searching for US citizens who could be in Syria. Due to the efforts taken by Russian officials, we have found out that one of them, Kevin Dawes, was under arrest in Syria on charges of illegal entry and other offences. In response to our appeal, the Syrian authorities decided to show mercy and released this US citizen for humanitarian considerations.
On April 1, Kevin Dawes arrived in Moscow aboard a Russian military transport plane and was turned over to representatives of the US Embassy and soon after left Russia. We hope he will not find himself in similar circumstances again and that Washington will show appreciation for this goodwill gesture of Damascus.
